educational programs/curriculum
Aviva High School is certified by the California Department of Education to serve students with an eligibility of Emotional Disturbance, Specific Learning Disability, or Other Health Impairment/ADHD, and to provide the related service of pupil counseling. Lunch and nutritional snacks are served daily and door-to-door transportation is provided at no cost.
Aviva High School is comprised of six classrooms, a computer lab, a library and a multipurpose room. Each classroom seats a maximum of 12 students. There is one special education credentialed teacher and one full-time teaching assistant per classroom, allowing for increased teacher supervision and individual assistance to students. An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is created for all students to meet their unique academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs. Parents and/or guardians participate throughout their child’s IEP process and receive quarterly progress updates.
Curriculum
Students are placed in classes according to their functional ability and required courses. In addition to the core curriculum, a variety of elective classes such as foreign language, creative writing, cooking, fine art, computer skills, poetry, knitting, and dance are offered (subject to faculty availability). See a full listing of our current classes here [PDF: 23KB].
All students participate in weekly transition courses that focus on career and vocational skills in each student’s area of interest and/or strength. Classes enrich students’ employment, educational, and independent living skills.
Summer School
Aviva High School also offers a four-week summer school program designed to enrich and broaden students’ reading, writing, and math skills and prepare students to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Summer school courses meet LAUSD requirements and allow students to earn credits toward graduation.
Dual Enrollment
As students meet their behavioral and academic goals, dual enrollment may be possible, allowing them to participate in one or two classes in the public school system and return to AHS to complete the school day.
